The end of Maplins?
It appears maplin are going out of business (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/feb/19/troubled-electronics-chain-maplin-in-talks-to-find-buyer).
Not exactly a surprise. They completely lack focus. Over the years they've gone from selling mainly electronics to slowly adding other things. I remember having a maplin catalogue around the house about 20 years ago and it was basically all electronics parts. Just about anything you wanted was available at the local store.
But then computer parts slowly appeared. Only by the time they appeared in the catalogue everything was overpriced and out of date. And that was a long time ago. Since then it seems they've branched out into more areas. The problem is that they seem to be a jack of all trades and they're not mastering anything.
The only time I needed to go to maplins recently was for some thermal grease for a CPU and a connector. The range they had was terrible and the shop was just full of random chinese electronic crap that was overpriced. The electronic components were less than 10% of the overall floor space. Although the only reason I went was that maplins was about the only shop I could go and buy some components.
It seems as though they had moved away from their one unique feature and moved towards being a generic electronic tat shop. At which point you'd have to wonder why you would buy anything there.
